Bristol’s Breaking Bread pop-up restaurant village to reopen

The pop-up tipi village of restaurants called Breaking Bread will be reopening on Bristol’s Downs on Thursday, April 15th 2021.

This collaboration between some of the city’s best-loved bars and restaurants gave a boost to Bristol’s hospitality scene last summer, providing outdoor, socially distanced dining and drinking. It will again feature Pasta Loco, Pasta Ripiena, the Love Inn, the Pipe & Slippers and the Pony & Trap.

The first venue to reopen will be the Pipe & Lovers beer garden, a collaboration between the Pipe & Slippers and the organisers of the Love Saves The Day festival that will serve food and drinks under a canopy. There will be a menu of light bites created by chefs Josh Eggleton and Ben Harvey plus a Sunday roast.

The Breaking Bread restaurant will open later in spring. A 150-capacity seated entertainment tent will also be added to the village in the summer, hosting music and stand-up comedy events. Another new addition this year is The Team Canteen. This fully-equipped kitchen and events space will provide training and education for disadvantaged children and be the venue for pop-ups and fundraisers.

The organisers also plan to open the site’s venues up for private hire with packages for weddings, conferences and private parties.

Josh Eggleton, the project co-founder, said: “It’s great to be coming back to The Downs after such a great response last year.

“More than 35,000 people came to Breaking Bread over the four months we were open in 2020.

“We’ll be back open and ready for the relaxation of restrictions, providing a socially-distanced space to enjoy some al fresco drinks and we have a huge programme of events, initiatives and dining experiences planned in line with each phase of the reopening.

“Our community focus is going to be front and centre this year, with the Team Canteen being set up right in the middle of the site.

“We are hoping that it will be a really useful resource for community groups and other food organisations from across the city, helping us to give employment opportunities and training to young people and providing a space to showcase how we can make Bristol a fairer city.”
