A £16 million leisure development in the heart of Bridgwater town centre will provide more than 12,000 sq ft of flexible restaurant space in four high quality restaurant units available to let to a mix of dining brands. The regeneration project is spearheaded and funded by Sedgemoor District Council.
Northgate Yard, Bridgwater, Somerset is due for completion in October 2022. The overall 40,000 sqft scheme has already secured anchor tenants, WTW Scott Cinemas and Allstars Bowling, providing a 7-screen cinema, 8-lane bowling alley and sports bar which will generate strong footfall throughout the day and evening. The development will also be supported with outside dining areas, meeting places and landscaping. In addition, the adjacent green space called Brewery Field will be substantially improved and updated to feature an outdoor children’s play area, parkland with pond and landscaped planting with many new trees, shrubs and wildflowers.
The four restaurant units vary in size from 2,443 sqft to 3,488 sqft, each with substantial outdoor dining space in the landscaped grounds.
Doug Bamsey, Deputy Chief Executive of Sedgemoor District Council, says, “Northgate Yard is set to be a landmark destination for locals and tourists. This is a unique opportunity for local, regional and national food and drink brands to create high quality eating places for families and friends in a brand-new, town centre development.”
He continues, “One of the stand-out things about this project is the huge amount of community support. This is a much wanted and needed development and we’re delighted there is such an eagerness for this project to come to fruition, delivering a first-class leisure and entertainment hub for the area.”
The state of the art 7-screen cinema, operated by South West company, Scott Cinemas, will provide year-round entertainment for all ages and tastes with separate screens offering a luxury studio experience with sofa seating and reclining seats. The brand-new ten-pin bowling alley operated by regional company Allstars will entertain families and groups with 8 lanes of bowling and sports bar facilities.
Along with the adjoining areas of North Petherton and Wembdon, Bridgwater has circa 47,5000 residents whilst the total catchment for the retail area is 70,000 according to PROMIS. The £23 billion construction of Hinkley Power Station has supercharged the Bridgwater economy, generating circa 5000 jobs and 3,500 new homes, and the recently opened 120 bed 4* Mercure hotel in the town centre offers high quality accommodation. Tourist accommodation at Brean and Berrow also draws up to 50,000 visitors over the season who will also see Northgate Yard as a place to visit. With excellent road links from the M5, the Northgate Yard development will be a strong draw for visitors as well as residents.
Northgate Yard is the culmination of many years of planning for a central entertainment and dining hub for Bridgwater. Led by Sedgemoor District Council, Northgate Yard has been conceived with the local community and local economy at its heart. The Council have worked closely with the community to create and deliver a vision reflecting what the people of Bridgwater want to see. Widespread public support means the much-anticipated development will become a destination for the local community and visitors.
