Discover a Cornish Christmas shopping experience in the heart of the festive city

Truro Farmers Market has announced that it is joining forces with Truro BID to bring a local shopping experience with a magical atmosphere to the city this festive season.

The BIG Christmas Market will run from 24th November through to 24th December on Lemon Quay, and will feature a revolving selection of the finest local food, drink, arts and crafts. With all the sights, smells and flavours of a Cornish Christmas, this will be an irresistible invitation to buy from local farmers, small food producers and talented craftspeople.

Abi Steel from Visit Truro, which is enthusiastically supporting the month-long market, said: “We want to make this Christmas both special and safe here in Truro, and an open-air market featuring fantastic local produce is a great way of achieving that.”

Truro Farmers Market is a cooperative of local producers which was formed in 1999; the market trades from Lemon Quay in Truro every Wednesday and Saturday, and on The Moor in Falmouth every Tuesday.

In recent years the market has experienced a resurgence, with a new generation of shoppers discovering the joys of what lies beneath the green and white stripped stalls; it was named one of ‘The Best Outdoor Markets in Britain,’ in The Times this summer, and has also been recognised with a TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Award.

Market Coordinator Stewart Girvan commented: “We always try and put on a great showcase of the market in the run up to Christmas, but this year our wonderful traders will have a bigger presence than ever before. We can’t wait to bring a magical atmosphere to the heart of the city with The BIG Christmas Market.”

Alun Jones, Truro BID Manager added: “We’re delighted to support The BIG Christmas Market, in addition to which Truro BID will be delivering street food and drink stalls on Boscawen Street on late night shopping Wednesdays and four Saturdays from 27th November onwards. Both these initiatives will help support Truro’s high street as, by strengthening the Christmas offer, they will help attract footfall and encourage people to stay longer in town.”

Full details are currently being finalised, but essentially anyone visiting Truro in the month preceding Christmas is in for a treat. Food lovers will be greeted with an array of tempting stalls; fresh, sustainably-caught fish and shellfish, grass-fed and free range meat from local farmers, artisan dairy products and sought-after store cupboard ingredients. Drinks aficionados can expect a huge swathe of locally made craft beer, small-batch cider, award-winning wine and artisan spirits from Cornwall’s finest producers.

A treasure-trove of art and craft stalls will feature everything from vintage homewares to willow weaving, handmade soaps to eye-catching jewellery – perfect for picking up unique gifts.

As well as shopping for food supplies, decorations and gifts, visitors can immerse themselves in a proper festive experience with street food, music and entertainment – in short everything you need to get into the Cornish Christmas spirit.

The market will include over 80 traders attending on a revolving basis, and will be open on Wednesday evenings for late night shopping. Local producers are hoping for a busy Christmas after an unpredictable 18 months, and also that the completion of the Hall For Cornwall development will bring a special buzz to the city this festive season.
