For over 40 years, White Row Farm, in Somerset has been farmed as an arable and pig farm but back in 2000 there was a need to diversify. The owners gambled on the idea of a farm shop where they could sell everything that they produced on the farm.
They never looked back, and that shop has now become a celebrated local “food village” just off the busy A36 at Beckington, near Frome. Not only does the shop continue to thrive, stocking beautiful home-grown, seasonal vegetables and farm-reared pork but there is now a fish counter, a deli, a florist, an in-house butchery and a gift shop, café and play area.
Despite the expansion, the founding ethos remains – that food miles are kept as low as possible. All the produce and meat produced on the farm is sold at the farm shop or used to produce the delicious meals found in the deli and the café and where other products are bought in, they come from local suppliers who have been carefully selected to feature at White Row Farm.
The farm shop regularly holds “taster days” where local producers can come and display their produce, the customers can try it and offer their feedback, and everyone has a thoroughly productive day out!
All at White Row Farm genuinely believe that you can taste the difference between food that is “just’ produced, and food that is produced with pride and care and sharing it with their customers is what they love. They are happy to sow, grow, weed, water, tend, cut, dig, prune, pick, pull, feed, forage, raise, nurture, collect, harvest, wash, prep, cook, bake, boil, fry, sell. Phew! If you are passing through Somerset, why not enjoy the fruits of all that labour and pay them a visit.
