Brewed at Sharp’s ‘pilot plant’ brewery in Rock, the latest limited edition pale ale, One Giant Leap has been released especially for Goonhilly 60, the event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Goonhilly Earth Station. One Giant Leap will bring ‘out of this world’ flavours to the Lizard peninsula for the one night of celebrations on the 23rd July 2022.
One Giant Leap is a remake of the popular brew created by Sharp’s for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in 2019. Festivalgoers this year can expect an equally inter-planetary 3.6% hoppy pale ale brewed with planet malt and galaxy and aurora hops with a taste that is truly extra-terrestrial.
The 3.6% ABV pale ale gets its name from Neil Armstrong’s iconic moon landing in 1969, which has a connection to Goonhilly, as the station’s enormous Arthur satellite dish allowed for the Apollo 11 mission to be transmitted across the Atlantic. Sharp’s and the team at Goonhilly were keen to bring back the beer which was so popular at the 2019 event for the 60th anniversary celebrations taking place this weekend. The event will feature acts providing live performances of some well-known artists, such as the Kaleidoscope Orchestra’s rendition of Daft Punk’s greatest hits and the Dark Side of the Moon Experience which pays tribute to 50 years of Pink Floyd.
Aaron McClure, Sharp’s Brewery’s head brewer, said: “We are really proud to be bringing back One Giant Leap to commemorate Goonhilly Earth Station’s 60th anniversary. Brewing this special beer initially for the 50-year anniversary of Apollo 11’s mission to the moon was a truly special task for us. The incredible views of the Arthur space dish alongside the backdrop of the stunning Lizard really makes it an event not to be missed. Come down to the Goonhilly 60 festival on the 23rd July and experience some of the amazing live acts, which can be enjoyed with a One Giant Leap in hand.”
Furthering this, Matt Cosby, chief technology officer of Goonhilly Earth Station, said: “We are really honoured that successful local company like Sharp’s Brewery is helping us mark our 60th anniversary by creating a special brew. One Giant Leap was initially created in 2019 for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s Moon landing and it went down exceptionally well then, so we’re thrilled to have it back for festival goers this weekend. Goonhilly 60 will commemorate the Earth Station’s contribution to space communications, so, as well as the music and beer, we will be having lots of interactive workshops, talks, and panels to engage everyone with lots of fascinating space-related topics. Some of these include talks from authors such as space travel writer, David Whitehouse, as well as workshops like the ‘Sea to Stars’ experience which will delight visitors with astronomy and geophysics from some of the most curious of minds around Cornwall.”
One Giant Leap will be available exclusively at Goonhilly 60 on 23rd July 2022. For more information about Goonhilly 60, please visit Goonhilly Earth Station’s site at: goonhilly.live. For more information about Sharp’s, please see Sharp’s Brewery’s website at: www.sharpsbrewery.co.uk.
