Improving with age – Colwith Farm Distillery ventures into aged spirits category

A leading UK single estate distillery, based in Cornwall, introduces a new limited edition aged vodka and gin to their award-winning collection of Aval Dor premium spirits.

Colwith Farm Distillery’s spirits are sustainably made in small batch production – distilled from Cornish potatoes, grown on their fifth-generation family farm in Lanlivery.

Seeking to push the boundaries of what’s possible, working within their plough-to-bottle philosophy – and following the success of Colwith’s Aval Dor Original Vodka being named the first British vodka ever to win a Platinum Medal at The San Francisco World Spirits Competition (May 2022) – moving into the aged spirits category seemed the natural progression for founder Steve Dustow.

He says “We couldn’t resist laying down our award-winning vodka in first- fill American oak barrels. Just to see! The result is better than we ever imagined! Our Rye Barrel Aged Vodka has been enriched with sweet, creamy vanilla undertones, subtle spice, and charred oak. And our Barrel Aged Spiced Gin has reached a whole new level! The juniper, orange zest and nutmeg botanicals blend perfectly with the American Oak, not to mention the American Bourbon which the barrels originally held”.

Unlike most distilleries who buy-in mass produced ethanol, Colwith handcrafts everything from scratch on a single estate. In terms of provenance, authenticity, and quality – it doesn’t get any better.

The aged vodka and gin category is relatively small, but handled correctly, the combination of time and charred oak can transform and enhance the spirit, offering both the trade and consumer markets something unique to experiment with serves and cocktails.

The limited-edition Aval Dor Barrel Aged Vodka (£70cl, £44) and Aval Dor Barrel Aged Gin (70cl £47) arrives in advance of the festive season – complimented with the addition of a Barrel Aged Mini Gift Pack (x 4 mini’s, £27) and a ‘Spirit Of Colwith Barrel Aged Hamper’ (£99) also available in time for Christmas (while stocks last).

“This is just the start of an exciting journey into aged spirits from Colwith Farm Distillery”, says Dustow. “We have riches on our own land that we are starting to explore, so watch this space!”
