A multi award winning confectionary business that specialises in selling flapjacks and sweet treats has nominated the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust as its supported charity with new ‘pony plops’ added to its offering, in honour of the native Dartmoor pony.
Flapjackery has pledged to donate £1.50 for every Dartmoor box sold – a delicious range of six chunky flapjacks – at its Tavistock branch. It will also donate 20p every time someone chooses not to take their flapjacks away in a recyclable box.
The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust was established nearly 20 years ago to protect and preserve, as a species, the native ponies of Dartmoor for the benefit of the public. It works with pony keepers who own and breed Dartmoor ponies, helping secure their future on the moors. It also promotes the Dartmoor pony as a riding pony and for conservation grazing, and manages 450 hectares of moorland and heathland at Bellever, Postbridge, where it runs a herd of up to 28 Heritage Dartmoor ponies. Regular free guided walks take place across Bellever which help people learn about the ponies, conservation grazing, wildlife and habitats on Dartmoor.
However, all this comes at a cost and the charity relies on public support with donations. Malcom Snelgrove, chairman of the DPHT, said: “We are so pleased that we are Flapjackery’s chosen charity and that they and their customers are fundraising for us. The DPHT is such an important charity, not only in the work it is doing to ensure a sustainable future for traditional Dartmoor ponies, but also through its conservation work, and by engaging with the public so that they are inspired to connect with Dartmoor’s wildlife, landscape and heritage.”
Carol Myott, who owns Flapjackery with her business partner Sally Jenkin, said: “We’re based on the edge of Dartmoor and we know and love the ponies that run wild there. They are iconic with people coming from far and wide to see them, and are an important visitor draw. They are also an important part of our heritage and culture and it’s sad to think that the days of native Dartmoor ponies as we know them could be numbered, so we are delighted to be able to support the work of the charity, and increase awareness through our Tavistock shop.”
Flapjackery will celebrate its eighth birthday in June. It has undergone an expansion programme and in 2022 added shops at Plymouth, St Ives and Bath to the retail premises it already has in Wells, Minehead and Tavistock. It also has a thriving online business with a huge array of flapjacks available. They are all gluten free, made with the best British ingredients and with an eclectic range of choices such as Salted Caramel Brownie, Summer Fruits Crumble Dark Chocolate Orange and Cherry Bakewell.
