New plastic-free local market launching in Falmouth this spring

Plans have been revealed for a new regular local producer’s market in Falmouth, which will take place on Discovery Quay on Fridays starting from 19th May.

The new venture is being led by the team behind Truro Farmers Market, which has a well-established market on Lemon Quay in Truro on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and one on The Moor in Falmouth every Tuesday.

Discovery Market will feature a wealth of local food and drink producers alongside artisan craft makers and promises to bring a vibrant, diverse, and tasty melting pot of flavours and creativity to Falmouth’s quayside each week.

The organisers have pledged to deliver a market completely free of single use plastic; all traders will be required to use only biodegradable packaging, glass, or offer refills where possible.

Truro Farmers Market itself has gone from strength to strength in recent years, flourishing during the pandemic and regularly being named as one of the best farmers markets in the UK, most recently by The Sunday Times.

As well as the weekly markets, the organisers run hugely popular ‘mini-festivals’ at key times of year including Easter and Christmas, and are currently planning celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the market’s inception next year.

Market Coordinator Stewart Girvan said: “We’re extremely excited to be launching a new sister market to Truro Farmers Market this spring. The Friday markets on Falmouth’s Discovery Quay will be packed with some great producers, making it easy for local people to grab their weekend supplies, and visitors to experience a colourful microcosm of the region’s food, drink, art and craft.”

Rebecca Ready, who is Project Lead for the new market, continued: “It was really important to us that the market be free from all single use plastic, especially considering the location right by the water in Falmouth. As the market grows and develops, expect to see traders thinking outside the box – using plastic-free industry alternatives to show that single-use packaging can be eliminated from supply chains for good!”

She added: “It will be a great gathering of positive minds and exciting finds each week – hence Discovery Market – right outside the National Maritime Museum, with convenient parking close by. We can’t wait to get started in May!”

Applications from potential traders are being taken via the website www.discoverymarket.co.uk and for updates follow @discoverymarket_ on Instagram.
