Historic pasty maker Warrens opens its second shop in Barnstaple on Friday, June 30. An official opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 1 in the store at 73 High Street, with deputy mayor Cllr Janet Coates cutting the ribbon at 10am.
The outlet joins Warrens’ existing presence on Gammon Walk. High Street customers can eat on site, with café seating inside and outside, or buy to take away. As well as Warrens’ usual range – hot pasties and other savouries, doughnuts, cakes, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks – the store will introduce Barnstaple to Tango Ice Blast, a slushie-style drink that’s all the rage with young people. Look out for special offers across local and social media, including the opportunity to win a box of delicious pasties, and buy-one-get-one-free vouchers being given out on the High Street to claim a free pasty on opening week.
“We are thrilled to strengthen our position in the heart of this vibrant and historical town,” said Warrens chief executive officer Mark Sullivan. “We see significant potential for Barnstaple and North Devon going forward, both in terms of a growing local population and tourism. Our presence goes back many decades, and we feel a central part of this community, so it’s good to be adding to local employment prospects once again. We hope customers enjoy the new brand concept, which is friendly and inviting, while offering some great products too.”
Warrens has been opening its oven doors to the fresh smell of hand-crafted bakery since 1860. Using premium, fresh ingredients and secret family recipes passed down through the generations, its bestselling hand-crimped pasties and prize-winning cakes and scones simply make life taste better. The range includes vegan and vegetarian options, as well as some great purse-friendly deals.
At the heart of the company is a love story that united two local families. When St Just baker’s daughter Miss Harvey met farmer’s son Master Warren, the result was a marriage made in heaven. While the farm provided the ingredients fresh from the fields, the Harveys made the pastry and baked the pasties.
The original shop opened in 1860, and several generations later, Warrens is the oldest Cornish pasty maker in the world, the oldest bakery in Cornwall and one of the oldest bakers in the UK. There are now 41 Warrens stores throughout Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, and South Wales, as well as in Gatwick Airport and Derriford Hospital, and in service stations at Cullompton, Peterborough and Cambridge. As part of an ongoing expansion plan, three more stores will open this summer, and the rebrand of existing stores is scheduled for completion by mid-2024.
