Sunny vibes and tasty supplies: Truro prepares to host The BIG Summer Market

The Cornish summer in all its glory is set to explode onto Lemon Quay for a two-day celebration of bountiful local produce and creative spirit this August. Truro Farmers Market and Cornwall Shop Small are teaming up once again for a seasonal mini festival bringing together some of the region’s finest food producers, artisan drinks purveyors, and inspirational craft makers in an event “brimming with sunny vibes.”

The BIG Summer Market will take place on Lemon Quay over the 18th and 19th August, from 9am – 4pm each day, and will feature over 60 stalls, live music, entertainment, street food, craft demonstrations and – on Saturday 19th – a Chilli Eating Competition.

The BIG Summer Market has become a popular event in Truro’s annual calendar, drawing thousands of people to Cornwall’s capital with its promise of colourful and abundant fresh produce, irresistible food and drink, and a friendly, ‘meet the maker’ shopping experience.

Sarah Curley of The Cornwall Shop Small Market said: “We love our seasonal collaborations with Truro Farmers Market. Our cooperative of talented creators and curators will be showcasing beautiful home and lifestyle wares, vintage and salvage finds, unique ceramics and pottery, original paintings and prints, sustainable fashion accessories and handmade jewellery – all with a joyful summer theme.”

She continued: “Across both our Cornwall Shop Small stalls and the Truro Farmers Market traders, visitors can expect a captivating variety of original, eye-catching, artisan, small batch, and quality products. Every purchase supports an indie trader, small business, or family farm, which is great for the local economy.”

The stallholders of Truro Farmers Market will be out en masse, with an enticing array of sun-ripened fruit and veg, fresh fish and shellfish, local meat for the BBQ, artisan cheeses and everything you need for the ultimate outdoor summer bar, including wine, beer, cider and spirits. Locally grown flowers and plants will also be on sale in abundance, providing a riot of summer colour.

Market Coordinator Stewart Girvan said: “Our BIG seasonal markets are so much more than just a shopping trip – it’s a whole day out in the city with live music and entertainment to enjoy, and an amazing selection of street food to get stuck into.”

He added: “The chilli eating competition takes place on Saturday 19th and is open to the public, and some of our traders like to get involved in this fun event too. We’ll be using Cornish Chillies of course; Scott and Sue grow over 40 varieties, from heatless to super-hot! Look out for more details on our social media accounts soon.”
