Warrens Bakery feeds over 500 mini and youth rugby players

The oldest bakery in Cornwall, Warrens Bakery, is delighted to announce they have had the opportunity to provide 475 sausage rolls, 45 vegan rolls and 120 Christmas biscuits to the Penzance and Newlyn RFC Mini and Junior Section, and their opponents, over the last few weeks. Founded in 1860, Warrens Bakery is proud to put a firm focus on its Cornish heritage and their traditional baked favourites, and provided their filling savouries and festive biscuits as tasty after match treats for the youth players.

Commenting on the partnership, Euan McNeill, Chairperson to Penzance and Newlyn RFC Mini and Junior Section, said: “Warrens Bakery has their roots in Penwith and is a familiar face in our community. We have a number of parents who have connections to them and after one of our volunteers approached Warrens regarding supporting our Pirates and Newlyn Minis and Juniors we have been building a partnership that we hope will continue into the future. So far, the Warrens team at the Terrace Penzance has provided after-match food for over 500 home and away players over three weeks, making sure that our minis, juniors and their opponents are given something hot and tasty after a game of rugby.”

Euan, continues: “We are really pleased to have started our relationship with a proudly Cornish company, who is supporting not only our youth teams, the future of the sport and the community game, but also Wooden Spoon, the children’s rugby charity. We look forward to what 2024 brings for our teams alongside Warrens Bakery.”

Louise Batty, Marketing Manager of Warrens Bakery, adds: “We are thrilled to be working with the Penzance and Newlyn RFC Mini and Junior Section. Through our commitment to them we are pleased to have provided some of our most popular baked goods to help fuel the energy and passion of these budding athletes. We appreciate the significance and importance of the community and also teamwork, values that are integral to the Warrens team, but also to Penzance and Newlyn RFC youth teams. The support therefore felt like a perfect fit for us both and also helps us strengthen our existing relationship with the rugby community.”

In December, Warrens Bakery furthered its presence within the rugby community by announcing their special charity Christmas campaign, ‘Naughty or Nice’. The campaign focused on the ultimate battle of the pasties with customers being asked to choose between the Traditional Cornish ‘Nice’ Pasty represented by Cornish Pirates’ fullback Kyle Moyle, or the Festive Turkey and Cranberry ‘Naughty’ Pasty represented by Exeter Chiefs’ scrum-half Sam Maunder. The campaign ran throughout December with 10p from all Festive Pasty purchases being donated to the children’s rugby charity Wooden Spoon, to raise money for their Disability Tag Rugby Festival next summer.

From humble beginnings on the cobbled streets of St. Just, two Cornish families, the Warrens and the Harveys, in 1860 united in marriage. One family provided the filling while the other family made the pastry and baked the pasties and this is how Warrens Bakery was established. Popularity for their Cornish pasties and Saffron Cakes quickly grew amongst miners, farmers and the local community. 160 years on and Warrens Bakery is proud to be the oldest Cornish pasty producer in the world, feeding families for generations.
