Just next door to the renowned Lost Gardens of Heligan, is Lobbs Farm Shop. This fabulous Cornish farm shop is beautifully maintained and stocked by the three Lobb brothers who produce most of the grass-fed beef and lamb on sale in the butchery on their three farms. They also grow a delicious selection of seasonal vegetables including courgettes, cabbage, leeks and curly kale, a fanfare of local goodness that is harvested on the very day that it is displayed in the shop. This is “field to fork” retail at its most impressive.
Anything not produced on their own farms is brought in from other West Country producers with an extensive cheese counter and deli. Of course, there’s Cornish yarg and Helford Blue but there’s also some bold and pungent Cornish camembert and even Cornish Brie. My mouth is watering at the thought.
Open seven days a week, this is the place to come for all your culinary needs with local preserves, a healthy choice of biscuits, store cupboard essentials or homemade pies and handmade ready meals, should you want to put your feet up and let someone else do the work. All you need to do is crack open a bottle of something cold to wash it down and there’s plenty of choice – from local Cornish apple and elderflower cider to Betty Stog’s Cornish bitter. Even the spirits are from down the road, with the fabulously fruity rhubarb and raspberry gin from Tarquins, or the Kernow Rum Co’s Stargazy caramel rum. Deciding on your tipple could be quite tricky.
We all know that Cornwall boasts a fantastic selection of food and drink but perusing the shelves at Lobbs Farm Shop, it hits you between the eyes and stirs the taste buds.
There’s also a farm shop café on site, if you simply must eat then and there with a delicious menu celebrating, you’ve guessed it, all things local to Cornwall and the West Country. Pop in for a genuine taste of Cornwall. You won’t regret it!
