Cornwall’s Boddington’s Berries, who have been growing fresh strawberries for sale all over the UK for over 75 years, as well as crafting fine preserves by hand at the family’s farm in Mevagissey, have split their business to enable them to focus on expanding their highly successful premium preserves range.
Under the new brand strategy, Boddington’s will sell the expanding range of delicious conserves, chutneys and relishes online to consumers across the UK, as well as direct to retailers, caterers and wholesalers in the South West and beyond.
“Our Conserves are meticulously slow-cooked in small batches to the natural setting point, using our own traditional recipe. We’re proud of the very high fruit content, with no artificial preservatives or any added pectin.” Phil Boddington.
Boddington’s Berries remains as the successful fresh fruit sales side of the business, producing the cream of the Cornish strawberry crop.
Boddington’s was established in 1946, when William Boddington began growing fresh produce and flowers in his fields above Mevagissey, just after the end of the Second World War. Over the years, the crop varieties were whittled down until the late 1960’s, when the family decided to specialise in strawberries. The temperate south coast of Cornwall has the perfect climate to grow some of the best strawberries in the world.
In 2001, Boddington’s began making a high fruit content Strawberry Conserve. There was a phenomenal response and in recent years sales of conserves have overtaken the sales of fresh strawberries. Over the last decade, the family has diversified their range of products to meet demand and now have a superb, award-winning range of conserves, relishes and chutneys.
“Our new Chilli Jam is bursting with sweet yet spicy flavours… customer feedback has been amazing. It’s gorgeous with paninis, fishcakes, burgers and especially cheese!” Will Boddington.
Boddington’s remain a family business, run by Phil and Louise Boddington and their son Will – the fourth generation to be involved in the business.
