Time to get your crimp on!

Cornwall’s St Piran’s Market and Pasty Making Competition returns. Cornwall’s finest food and drink producers will be out in force, alongside street food sellers to satiate all appetites; from gourmet burgers to loaded fries, warming curries to colourful poke bowls, visitors will be spoilt for choice.

Anyone with a sweet tooth is in for a treat, with the traditional Cornish fair of Saffron Buns, Hevva Cake, Fairings and Scones on offer alongside cookie sandwiches, churros and freshly made crepes.

Sustainable fashion, handmade jewellery, organic skincare, and vintage collectables are just a few of the art and craft purveyors booked to attend, as Cornwall’s makers show off the proud local traditions of creativity and ingenuity. As in previous years, amongst the market stalls will be dotted entertainment, family activities, street performers, and vintage tractors, making a day trip to the city well worth it. Live music, including from Cornish singer songwriter Will Keating, will provide a special St Piran’s soundtrack for marketgoers.

The highly anticipated Pasty Making Competition is back alongside a new epic struggle, The Battle of The Bakeries. As in previous years, the Pasty Making Competition is open to all, and will be judged by members of the Buscombe family from The Cornish Mill & Bakehouse, where four generations work together to produce a wide range of bread, cakes, biscuits and delicious pasties. Entrants can target one of two categories or enter both: The ‘Cornwall’ category calls for excellence in traditional Cornish pasty-making, whereas ‘Rest of the World’ asks for experimental or fusion flavours and ingredients from anywhere in the world. Across both categories the judges will be looking for good crimping skills, great quality ingredients, and excellent taste.

Competitors are asked to bring their ready-to-eat pasty (hot or cold) to the market on Lemon Quay between 10am – midday on the day of the market, 2nd March, where they’ll find a dedicated judging area; the winner will be announced later that day, and there are prizes for each category.

This year the Battle Of The Bakeries is an opportunity for pasty professionals to get involved; any local bakeries interested in taking part should email stewart@trurofarmers.co.uk for more info, or keep an eye on Truro Farmers Market’s social media platforms.
