In an era of digital connectivity and virtual networking, one might question the relevance of traditional trade shows. Yet, in the vibrant and diverse landscape of the South West of England, events like the Source tradeshow and Expowest Cornwall trade show continue to prove their significance in the food, drink, and hospitality industry. These gatherings serve as vital platforms for innovation, collaboration, and community building, fostering growth and resilience in an ever-evolving sector.

As a food, drink, and hospitality news editor, stepping onto the bustling floor of the Source trade show a couple of weeks ago was so exciting. Surrounded by the tantalising aromas and displays, I found myself immersed in the beating heart of the industry. I was eager to uncover the trends, flavours, and innovations that define the South West’s culinary landscape.

Attending trade shows like Source and Expowest Cornwall offers the opportunity to taste, see, feel, and communicate. Each exhibit presents a diverse array of culinary delights, from meticulously crafted artisanal cheeses to locally distilled spirits full of character. I loved sampling the offerings from exhibitors such as The Cornish Cheese Co, where I couldn’t resist trying every variety but found the fresh, lemony, and creamy Cornish Yarg to be my favourite, to indulging in a smooth cappuccino paired with a slice of tangy blood orange curd tartlet from The Curator. Piqi’s delicate and refreshing Butterfly Pea Kombucha earned a resounding yes from me, while Barbuoy Cocktails tempted me with their exotic Passionfruit Martini and (cheekily) the classic Espresso Martini too. Imaginative Cuisine served up the most mouth-watering Olive Sphere which was launched at the show and a sprinkling of their decadent Truffle Dust, amongst many other treats. As I explored the diverse range of products, from the creamy richness of Devonshire ice cream to the tangy bite of West Country cheddar, I was struck by the craftsmanship, passion, and tradition that stand behind each bite and sip.

Beyond the aromas and flavours, trade shows offer a rare opportunity to connect with the vibrant community of food, drink, and hospitality professionals that call the South West home. From the passionate producers pouring their heart and soul into each product to the innovative chefs pushing the boundaries of culinary creativity, alongside wholesalers, butchers, fruit & veg suppliers, equipment specialists, EPOS system providers and accountants specialising in the hospitality sector, there’s a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose that fills the air. Catching up with representatives from organisations like Food Drink Devon, Taste of the West, and Fabulous Farmshops, I’m inspired by their dedication to promoting local flavours, sustainable practices, and the culinary heritage of the region.
Attending trade shows isn’t just about sampling delicious fare and rubbing elbows with industry insiders — it’s also about unearthing the hidden gems and emerging trends that are shaping the future of the industry. From innovative food and beverage pairings to eco-friendly packaging solutions from Purple Planet Packaging, No More Lids with The Good Cup, H S French Flint with their glass storage solutions and Westaway Sausages using compostable film and cardboard trays, each booth holds the promise of discovery and insight.
As I strolled through the aisles, notebook in hand, I had some fantastic conversations with people about their journeys — why they developed their products, how their companies evolved and grew, their passion for their offerings, as well as their ideas for expanding and reaching new audiences.
As the day came to an end, and I reluctantly bid farewell to the trade show floor, I found myself reflecting on why I was there. In an industry defined by its passion, creativity, and resilience, events like these serve as vital touchstones, bringing together professionals from all corners of the South West and beyond to celebrate their shared love of the industry. As I return to my desk, armed with the stories and experiences, I’m reminded once again of the enduring relevance and importance of trade shows in shaping the future of the industry, and I can’t wait to go and do it all over again at Expowest Cornwall next month.
