B Corp Origin Coffee announces roastery expansion in Porthleven

Leading B Corp speciality coffee roasters, Origin Coffee, announces the expansion of its Cornwall roastery. The significant development reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to excellence in speciality coffee as well as its dedication to supporting the local community and environment.

In mid-October 2024, Origin Coffee will open an additional section of its Porthleven Roastery, adding 2,000 square feet of roasting and production space. The evolution of the roastery comes as Origin celebrates its 20th anniversary, a milestone that underscores its commitment to quality, transparency, and innovation within the speciality coffee industry.

By taking over the metal workshop adjacent to the current roastery, Origin is able to maintain a strong connection to its Cornwall roots and offer a large number of opportunities to those in the surrounding area. As of August 2024, the company has grown from 50 employees to 115 with half of the team based at the Porthleven Roastery and local cafés. Over this time, many new roles have been created including Sustainability Manager, Positive Impact Assistant, and People and Culture Coordinator; further reinforcing Origin’s ongoing focus on recruiting locally and contributing to the economic sustainability of Cornwall.

As a certified B Corp and winner of the 2023 Best Speciality Coffee Roasters in Europe, Origin Coffee is not only a leader in the coffee industry but also a pioneer in building sustainable business practices. The company is committed to setting new standards and changing attitudes within the global speciality coffee sector, all while fostering meaningful relationships with growers, suppliers, and customers who share a passion for coffee excellence. Origin has worked closely with local planning authorities and industry specialists to ensure that the expansion adheres to strict regulations.

This development is a key component of Origin’s strategic growth plans over the next three years, positioning the company to meet increasing demand and further establish itself as a leader in the coffee industry.

CEO Tom Sobey comments, “Expanding our roastery is not just about increasing capacity; it’s about deepening our commitment to the quality and transparency that have defined Origin Coffee for the past 20 years. It will allow us to continue to source, roast, and brew exceptional coffee while supporting our local community and staying true to our values.”
