Winding through the lanes of this part of Devon, it’s easy to feel that you have travelled back in time. The narrow roads and high hedges twist and turn and, every now and then, a field gateway offers a stunning vista across the rolling fields with their neat plough lines or fertile crops. Just five minutes outside Bideford, set on a busy, traditional working farm lies this little farm shop, Heddens of Woodtown Farm.
This shop makes no apology for being all about the food that it sells. It doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a provider of the freshest and tastiest meat and vegetables. Provenance is key.
The farm shop is located within the farm yard and visitors to the shop can see where their purchases come from. The potatoes and green vegetables are grown a stone’s throw from where they are displayed for sale. Attractive, rustic black crates house fat, shiny leeks and earthy purple beetroot. Cabbages as crinkly and green as any you’ll see jostle for space next to carrots with their fronds still attached. This is veg that makes your mouth water and it is hard to resist filling your basket.
The shop offers a full butchery service too and the butchers are on hand to help guide you to making a fabulous choice. And what a selection there is! Plump, fresh chickens sit beside chunky pork chops or strips of juicy pork belly. There are sausages and burgers, topside, brisket or fillet steak. You will be leaving this shop with a slice of something delicious!
Open Monday to Saturday, it is worth popping the address in to your sat nav and winding your way to this farm shop. If you can’t make the trip, then the goodies are also for sale at various markets in the local area and deliveries can be made straight to your doorstep. There is no reason not to enjoy this local, delicious sustenance.
