Cornish Bakery, the independent, founder-driven company first started in Mevagissey, has this week unveiled its fully refurbished and restyled Bude bakery. This significant £100,000 investment has been made to ensure that the town has a quality, high-end, style-led bakery for the local community and visitors to enjoy spending time in year-round.
One of the UK’s most successful bakery companies, Cornish Bakery temporarily closed its popular Belle Vue location for two weeks to complete the full-scale interior renovation. The new, premium, modern bakery was officially reopened with the help of the town’s mayor, Cllr Steven Haynes, on Sunday 9th February.
Cornish Bakery has had a strong presence in Bude’s town centre for over 20 years (since 2004) where it has established itself as an intrinsic part of the vibrant local community. It provides employment for more than 8 local people year-round, all of whom have undergone retraining over the closure period.
The property now hosts seating for an increased 37 people to meet high demand (from just 32 pre-refurbishment). It boasts stunning new banquette-style seating alongside leather upholstered chairs and stools, making it the ideal spot for group catch-ups.
The stunning new marble counter and window displays perfectly show off the bakery’s range of cakes and viennoiseries, with striking ‘Costa Rica’ red feature tiling adding a pop of sophisticated colour, creating that high-end bakery feel.
The Cornish Bakery team has also worked with Cornwall-based Clayworks, a pioneering company with a vision to use natural materials, particularly earth, to create architectural finishes that are beautiful, environmentally responsible, and enhance the wellbeing of those who use the spaces. A new Clayworks Clay wall within the Bude bakery therefore has a finish that creates an earthy aesthetic whilst also making the walls breathable – all against the backdrop of beautiful pendant lighting from Cornish Tom Raffield.
Due to high demand, the company has installed a new coffee counter complete with a La Marzocco coffee machine and two coffee grinders, which will increase the speed of service. Cornish Bakery has a long-standing commitment to the B-Corp certified specialty coffee company Union who work in partnership with farmers to improve both quality of coffee and livelihoods. Additionally, a new cold-water tap has been installed inside the property to allow walkers and cyclists to refill their water bottles whilst on the move.
All Cornish Bakery products are freshly made and baked on site every single day and the open kitchen enables visitors to watch the team mixing, shaping, kneading and baking the extensive product range throughout the day.
Cornish Bakery’s managing director, Mat Finch said, “During the early part of this year, we are taking positive steps to invest in several of our properties and most importantly our team, who are vital to the everyday success of all our bakeries. We are proud to invest in our Cornish roots by refurbishing our Bude bakery. We have been in Bude for over 20 years and we love being part of the community here, it is a fantastic place with a brilliant and thriving community of people who really take pride in their stunning local environment.”
Mat continued, “After all this time in Bude, it was clear that a complete revamp was required, given that our brand has changed significantly, our product range has evolved into a more fulsome bakery experience and coffee has become our best seller. Now, I am fully confident that we’ve made it the premium, stylish space and experience for both residents in, and visitors to, the town, including their dogs! We’re looking forward to welcoming customers, new and old, into our beautiful new space.”
The Bude bakery sells Cornish Bakery’s range of delicious products including its award-winning pasties and sausage rolls, both lauded by The Times’ food reviewer Giles Coren. Additionally, it sells its daily crafted and baked viennoiseries, cakes, and handmade Cornish pasties alongside recently introduced runaway success options. These include the twice-baked Pistachio Croissant, stuffed with homemade frangipane and pistachio cream alongside the Shakshuka Croissant, filled with lightly spiced roasted peppers and sun-dried tomatoes combined with a cheesy bechamel sauce.
A perfect breakfast, lunch or afternoon stop off for shoppers, visitors and residents alike, experienced bakery manager Audrey Price and assistant bakery manager, James Martin will continue to lead the bakery after the refurbishment. They and the rest of the team are ready to welcome customers from 8am – 4.30pm every day of the week.
