On a sunny, spring day with a huge sky and a gentle breeze, leaving Weymouth behind and driving onto Portland can feel like a real adventure. The little spit of land joining Portland to the mainland has breath-taking views of Portland Harbour on one side and Fleet Lagoon, with the huge expanse of Chesil Beach disappearing off into the distance towards Golden Cap. The sea air is known to create a healthy appetite, so the positioning of Portland’s newest farm shop is particularly fortuitous!
The Beekeeper Farm Shop opened its doors in November 2024 and brings local food and drink to the gateway of Portland. Located on Lerret Road, it is housed in a big, modern unit next door to the Beehive café and coffee shop (recently shortlisted in the Countryside Alliance awards) and Bees Knees Bakes Bakery, both of which have been serving the needs of the local community for some time.
The Beekeeper provides all the accoutrements for a fabulous Sunday lunch or a mid-week supper. Meat and dairy products are sourced from fellow Dorset producers, The Jurassic Coast Farm Shop and Craig’s Farm Dairy and these sit temptingly beside fresh fruit and vegetables and a whole host of store cupboard essentials. Eco-friendly kitchen options are a central offering with bicarbonate of soda, citric acid and some wonderful brushes and cloths from Eco Living to help make helping the planet as easy as possible.
The bread, sourdough, sausage rolls and other baked goods all come from the neighbouring Bees Knees Bakery so could not be much fresher, and the sausage rolls have caused quite a stir with the locals – marmite-flavoured seem to be a hit!
A corner of the shop is also dedicated to artisan delights and handmade gifts so its not just food and drink. Hand-crafted candles and unique kitchenware are created locally and make great presents for others or a little treat for yourself.
If you are heading to Portland, why not pop in and see what the buzz is all about and follow along on Facebook and Instagram.
