On the south-eastern edge of the Dartmoor National Park, lies the historic market town of Buckfastleigh, filled with beautiful buildings, old pubs and quaint shops. Just south of town, just off the A38 and close to the Pennywell Farm Visitor Centre is Dean Court Farm with its excellent farm shop and café.
Views across the brooding hills of Dartmoor are all around but entrance to the shop is across the old farm yard with ample parking for the shop and the adjoining café.
The business welcomed new owners in May of this year, and Matt and Carol have been busy getting familiar with all that the locals had come to expect from the shop whilst also introducing their own favourites. A revamp has seen a new area opened with gleaming new meat and deli counters and wicker baskets full of fruit and vegetable.
The ethos of providing a market place stuffed with the best that Devon has to offer is continuing with local butchers filling the meat counter and the drinks’ fridges packed with local cider and ale and soft drinks from just across the road at Luscombe Drinks. There’s bread from local bakers and sauces, mustards and dips from nearby. On the attractive wooden shelves there’s porridge, pulses, pine nuts and peanuts and other things that don’t begin with the letter P!
Langage Farm ice cream tempts you from the freezer alongside small pots of Farmer Tom’s puddings. There are local pies and quiches, sausage rolls and pasties, Devon crisps and potato salad if you are after a quick takeaway bite or something for your picnic basket or the very welcoming kitchen will serve you breakfast or lunch with the ubiquitous Devonshire cream tea always an option.
If you time your visit for a Saturday, then a peripatetic fishman brings an incredible array of fresh crab, scallops, sole and salmon or whatever fresh fish has been caught that week – well worth stopping by!
The café area is also available for private hire for functions or large groups. The shop and café are open over the winter from 8.30am to 4.30pm (Monday to Saturday) and Sundays from 9.30am to 3pm.
