Sandford Orchards wins Tesco listing for award-winning Devon Red

Devon-based Sandford Orchards is delighted to announce that their award-winning Devon Red cider is going to be stocked in Tesco stores across the South West, following market-leading growth in the last quarter.

Barny Butterfield, owner and founder of family-run Sandford Orchards comments: “We are thrilled that our best-selling cider will now be available to a wider audience as a result of this latest supermarket listing. Off trade category data show that apple cider is having a resurgence with a value growth of 3% over the last year*. Supermarkets are acknowledging this trend, which is driven by a consumer desire for quality British drinks with provenance, limited food miles and sustainable production values. It is fantastic news for Tesco customers that the supermarket is broadening their range to accommodate great British brands, like Sandford Orchards, that are authentic, home grown and crafted.”

Barny continues: “The growth in cider sales across the board has also been boosted by a great summer, with plenty of sunny cider drinking occasions for all consumers, including those who may have broadened their drinking horizons by reaching for a cider instead of their usual beer. And whilst many cidermakers have benefitted from this sunshine effect, we have gone over and above that and out-performed this buoyant market due, in no small part, to our first ever above the line campaign, which has driven outstanding growth.”

Devon Red (ABV 4.5%) is a naturally tasty and utterly delicious, crisp and fruity cider. It takes its name from the rich red Devon soil that gives the orchards their distinctive quality. It is a refreshing, balanced apple cider packed with the juice of Farmers Glory, Dabinett and Sweet Alford apples, all grown and pressed in Devon. It is available from Sandford Orchards and other retailers, including Morrisons, The Co-op and, from November, Tesco stores across the South West.

Founded in 2002, independent, family-owned Sandford Orchards is based in Crediton, Mid Devon in the oldest working cider mill in the UK. The area has long been known as one of the most fertile parishes in all of Britain, both for its grazing and ability to grow apples. Sandford Orchards takes a fresh, natural and low impact approach to producing cider. Combining tradition and innovation, Sandford Orchards produces an award-winning range of core session, traditional, fine and fruit ciders.

*Apple cider is showing value growth of 3% in the last 52 weeks ending 4/10/25, whereas fruit cider is showing 7% decline over the same period according to Nielsen data.
