Sheppy’s Cider welcomed the local community to its annual Wassailing evening on Friday 23rd January, with over 450 attendees gathering at the cider farm near Taunton to celebrate one of Somerset’s oldest winter traditions. This year’s event was completely sold out, reflecting the growing popularity of the Wassail and the enduring connection between Sheppy’s and the local community.
Wassailing, a centuries-old custom traditionally held in January to wish apple trees well for a successful harvest in the year ahead, was brought to life with chanting, music and a strong sense of community spirit. The word Wassail comes from the Old English waes hael, meaning “be well”, and the ritual remains an important part of the region’s cider-making heritage.
At Sheppy’s, the evening began with the traditional blessing of the apple trees in the orchard, where guests took part in the ritual of singing to the trees and raising a toast to the coming harvest. The celebrations continued back at the farm with food, cider and lively activities, bringing together locals, families and visitors for a memorable winter evening rooted in Somerset tradition.
The highlight of the evening was the folk dancing, with participants of all ages joining in. Their shared enthusiasm and spirited performances created a joyful, unifying atmosphere that resonated throughout the event. Olivia, this year’s Wassail Queen, took a leading role in the celebrations, joining the Morris Men and adding a special touch to the evening.
Managing Director of Sheppy’s Cider, David Sheppy, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people come together to celebrate Sheppy’s eighth Wassail with us. The atmosphere in the orchard was brilliant, and it’s always special to keep this tradition alive while sharing it with the local community and visitors.”
Sheppy’s has been making cider in Somerset for over 200 years and continues to farm and produce cider at Three Bridges, Bradford-on-Tone, remaining closely connected to the land and local community.
The Wassail is a highlight of Sheppy’s winter activities and offers an opportunity to experience an authentic cider-making tradition in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Find out more through the Sheppy’s website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date with their news.
