Butcombe Original wins Gold at the International Brewing Awards

Butcombe Brewing Co is celebrating a major industry accolade after its flagship beer, Butcombe Original, secured a coveted Gold Medal at this year’s International Brewing Awards. The win came in the Smallpack Ale – Class 2 (4.5%–4.9% ABV) category, recognising the exceptional quality of Butcombe Original in cans.

This latest achievement follows a landmark moment for the brewery, with Butcombe Original recently becoming the South West’s most popular cask beer, overtaking long established category leaders including Doom Bar and Tribute. The Gold Medal further cements its position as one of the country’s most celebrated ales.

After three days of rigorous judging in Manchester, a panel of 43 internationally renowned brewers and cidermakers selected the world’s best beers and ciders. The results were announced live on Friday 6 March at a trade event hosted by the BFBI as part of the International Brewing & Cider Awards, held at Victoria Warehouse.

Jayson Perfect. COO, Butcombe Group says: “We’re incredibly proud to see Butcombe Original recognised on the world stage. This beer has been at the heart of our brewery for nearly five decades, and to receive a Gold Medal from such a respected panel of practising brewers is a huge honour. It’s a testament to our team, our commitment to quality, and the loyal drinkers who have made Original the South West’s favourite pint.”

The International Brewing & Cider Awards is the world’s oldest beer competition and a significant professional milestone for brewers and cidermakers. Its unique judging process relies exclusively on commercially practising experts, who provide detailed technical and commercial feedback to entrants.

Ruth Evans MBE, Chief Executive of the BFBI and Director of the International Brewing and Cider Awards, said: “Our international panel of brewers and cider makers have judged a fantastic array of beers and ciders from around the world. The results reflect the quality of entries this year – ensuring a high level of debate amongst the judges, debate being at the core of our judging process.”

All winners will be invited to an exclusive awards ceremony at The Guildhall, London, in May, where medals and trophies will be formally presented.
