St Buryan Farm Shop, Cornwall

At the very tip of the Fabulous Farm Shop map and very nearly in the Atlantic Ocean, is the highly-praised St Buryan Farm Shop. A short drive on from Penzance but not quite as far as Sennen and Land’s End, here is a shop brimming with all that the county holds dear; fresh, locally grown and sourced food that is as delicious as it is good for you.

Housed in a large, modern unit but surrounded by green fields full of homegrown vegetables, the shop is full of goodness. The vegetables are as fresh as they come, harvested from the fields around the unit with the lowest food miles possible. Whatever is in season is waiting to make it into your basket and onto your plate. Cabbages are lustrously green and corn on the cob swollen and juicy, jostling for space next to fat leeks and elegant carrots. Here is a vegetable selection as glorious as any rainbow.

The meat counter and in-house butcher are renowned amongst locals. The home-reared beef comes from the livestock enjoying the surrounding fields and the lush grass of the Cornish hillsides. The butchery is full of tempting cuts of meat from pork loin to lamb chops, sausages in all shapes, sizes and flavours, joints for a Sunday roast or mince for lasagnes and pies. The meat is also used in the beautiful pasties that are on sale in the shop. Are you even in Cornwall if you haven’t tried a local pasty?!

Deeper into the shop is a freezer full of homemade treats – the home of the ready meal. Forget any preconceptions of bland, supermarket ready meals. These are meals made with love. Stews, curries and pies can all be polished off at home and followed up by a naughty but delicious homecooked sticky toffee pudding.

The cheese counter is another thing of beauty stacked with Cornish yarg, Cornish brie, Blue Moon cheese and creamy goats’ cheese not to forget the other goodies sharing the cooler space – my eyes wander again to the thick Cornish cream just pleading with me to be spread on the homemade scones.

There is an incredible array of local treats at this fabulous farm shop served to you by people who know the provenance of their stock and believe wholeheartedly in the ethos of filling your tummy with fresh, local fodder to stay healthy and happy. We recommend a visit if you are heading to this far-flung corner of the UK. You’ll find a hearty welcome (and a café if you need sustenance after your drive!)

Find out more through their website stburyanfarmshop.co.uk and follow them on Instagram and Facebook.
