Butcombe Brewing Co opens its very first taproom – the Whitmore Tap

A new addition to Bristol’s thriving food and drink scene has opened its doors. Butcombe Brewing Co opened the Whitmore Tap, its very first taproom, on Wednesday 19th May 2021 on the site of the former Penny pub on Whiteladies Road in Clifton.

Named after Butcombe’s founder Simon Whitmore, The Whitmore Tap will serve the full range of award-winning Butcombe cask, keg and bottled beers and cider along with some exciting seasonal beers and small batch brews. Downstairs, in the street level bar, guests will be able to enjoy a raft of innovative bar snacks, small plates, sharing boards and yakitori skewers. Upstairs in the dining room, the menu will focus heavily on local, seasonal produce and robust dishes designed to celebrate Butcombe’s drinks range… all created in a Robata charcoal grill and open kitchen.

Jayson Perfect, Group Managing Director Pubs & Inns, Liberation Group says: “The opening of The Whitmore Tap is an incredibly exciting venture for us in that it’s our very first taproom and a real showcase of everything Butcombe Brewing Co stands for. Our award-winning food and drink will take centre stage in this beautifully designed, high-end and contemporary space where our guests can enjoy superb service and good old fashioned welcoming hospitality.”

Downstairs, in the bar, guests can relax in upholstered booths, perch on convivial high tables and stools and at scrubbed wooden tables. The site has been tastefully decorated using a combination of natural materials such as stripped wood, leather and glass highlighted with intimate lighting, eclectic artwork and plenty of greenery.

Upstairs in the dining room with views over Clifton, which is also available for private hire, meetings and events, light floods in courtesy of a plant lined roof lantern illuminating the huge Blackbeard mural on the rear wooden panelled wall.

Maureen Whitmore, wife of the late Simon Whitmore (founder of Butcombe) says: “The Whitmore Tap is a wonderful and generous tribute to my husband Simon. He was very entrepreneurial and his knowledge of brewing and pubs was vast which meant the brewery grew from strength to strength right from the start. I can’t tell you how proud and delighted we are as a family to see the brewery still going strong 43 years on despite these very difficult times. We couldn’t have started the brewery without the help of all those who worked with us, some of whom are still there. I wish The Whitmore Tap the greatest success”

Outside is a small cordoned off patio area which will be open until 10pm.
