Bristol company launch campaign to turn waste bread into sweet snacks

Bristol-based confectionary company Goüter is running a crowdfunding campaign to help it turn waste bread into chocolate and nut treats.

Co-founded by friends Joël Manuvelpillai and Damien Andre, they are looking to raise £25,000 to start turning bread that would otherwise go to waste into premium chocolate and nut clusters.

The company says that “…bread is the worst waste culprit with almost half (44%) of all bread baked in the UK going to waste. We’re changing the agenda around waste in the UK food industry, using our chocolate know-how to embrace waste and make something delicious. Chocolate + nuts + bread = Goüter.”

Joël Manuvelpillai said to Bristol 24/7 that “We want to put British chocolate back on the map starting in the city where JS Fry’s created the world’s first chocolate bar over 150 years ago.

“The Goüter brand will be known for its environmental credentials. We will work continuously to improve every aspect of production, so it has the minimal possible impact on the environment.”

They plan to sell their treats in five different combinations of chocolate and nut clusters including caramel, hazelnut & milk chocolate, pecan & caramel chocolate, almond & dark chocolate, almond & white chocolate, and hazelnut & milk chocolate.

The product will be sold in paper pouches rather than plastic packaging and they will not be using the plastic moulds found in most confectionery production.
