Rick Stein and North East-based restaurant company 21 Hospitality Group are hoping to bridge the sector skills shortage with a newly launched chef apprenticeship scheme.
Apprentices will learn on the job from Stein’s senior chefs in one of the company’s Cornwall kitchens. Skills will include preparing vegetables, filleting fish and making classic sauces. Expert chef tutors will also visit weekly from Truro & Penwith College.
Apprentices will work 40 hours per week with eight at college and gain paid work experience at a rate of at least £9.30 per hour for under-18s and £9.60 per hour for over-18s.
Students will receive the same benefits as Rick Stein employees and be offered permanent contracts after completing the apprenticeship. Successful apprentices will receive a Level 2 in professional cookery qualification. The scheme will continue to offer them future development opportunities as their career progresses.
In line with Rick Stein Restaurants operating flexible working, full-time employees can request to work a four-day week. For more details go to www.rickstein.com/careers/chef-apprenticeship/.
