New Ocean View Suites unveiled as part of two-year investment programme

A five-star hotel in Cornwall has created two exclusive Ocean View Suites, as part of an ongoing renovation programme.

The sumptuous suites at The Headland, Newquay, are the work of interior designer Jennie Trethewy, who first met hotel owners John and Carolyn Armstrong to discuss the alterations last November.

Jennie said: “We had a lovely first meeting chatting about the history of the building, the family’s aspirations for the future of the hotel and the forthcoming interior renovations. With a background in luxury 5-star hotel and spa design in the UK and internationally, I was instantly excited to work with the family on such an iconic project in my home county.”

Christmas was fast approaching and with the added Covid-related extensions of supplier lead times, Jennie quickly curated a selection of material palettes to meet their design brief, timelines and operational requirements.

The result is beautiful, relaxed luxury. The two new suites feature a bold mix of colour, pattern and texture, combining an impressive mix of antique furniture finds with bright and contrasting new fabrics.

“This is an approach I often take, creating a dynamic design that also offers a sense of familiarity and comfort,” said Jennie, who is based a few miles down the coast in St Agnes.

The backdrop of the bedroom scheme is Brunschwig & Fils Nizam print wallpaper in red and blue, whilst coral accents can be found in the upholstery fabrics, lampshades and bespoke cushions. Art is a very important aspect of the suites, with paintings specifically commissioned to ensure “harmonious unity”. The pieces are by landscape artists Maggie Cochran, Camilla Clark, Lyndsey Vowell and Dexios De Nysschen.

The suites form part of a two-year investment programme. With a quarter of the rooms and suites already having received an upgrade, plans are in the pipeline to renovate all 88 rooms, as well as The Samphire restaurant.

Joshua Jay-Bates, hotel operations manager, added: “In converting four rooms into two Ocean View Suites, we have reduced our quantity but increased our quality of service. We have created two new suites and also renovated the Honeymoon Suite as part of the first phase – as a result of their popularity we will soon start a second phase.”

The new Ocean View Suites deliver exactly what the name would suggest. Elevated, far-reaching views of the Atlantic Ocean which stretch as far as the horizon will allow. Lead-in price for a one-night stay is £340.
