Cornish Bakery opens in showcase Plymouth Barbican property

Independent bakery chain Cornish Bakery has announced the opening of another waterfront bakery in a Grade II listed former glassblowing building on Plymouth Barbican, Devon, as founder Steve Grocutt continues in his swift-growth mission to 100 sites.

Four other Cornish Bakery locations are currently in development at Caledonia Park at Gretna Green, Bury St Edmunds, Truro and Bakewell with Stamford, Beverley and Whitby Harbour opening in the past few months. Major refurbishments will also open shortly in Bideford and Newquay.

Built in 1896, the latest Cornish Bakery property carries Grade II listed status by Historic England. The former Plymouth Barbican fish market was created in the style of a train station by Sir James Inglis, engineer to GWR. The historic structure was only enclosed in 1995 when the new fish market opened on the east side of the harbour.

With 2,600 sq footage, double height ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides, affording impressive views onto the marina on one side and the picturesque cobblestoned Barbican on the other, this is a showcase bakery Cornish Bakery employed London-based independent interior design company Path, who specialise in both retail and hospitality, working alongside Cornish-based A-side, to maximise the architecturally-significant building.

Founder Steve Grocutt says, “From the minute I saw it, I knew this would be an incredible space for us – and the sophisticated design and fit-out has met all my expectations. We have one of our award-winning bakery managers leading her inspired team here, and you can’t help but feel the emotive power of this historical space and location as you enjoy one of our freshly-made quality products with a coffee. Yet again, we’re proving ‘bakery is the new coffee shop’ in the most sought-after destinations and locations across the UK, all backed with our top performing service proposition.”

Now one of the one of the largest independent, and top ten fastest-growing, bakery brands in the UK, Cornish Bakery, recently appointed KLM Real Estate to deliver further on its ambitious UK-wide expansion plans.
