A charity dinner hosted by The Alverton in Truro has raised over £5,500 for The Fishermen’s Mission. Cornwall’s top chefs came together on Thursday 13th October, in the Great Hall of the 19th century Truro hotel, to prepare a five-course tasting menu which was a true celebration of The Duchy’s coastal cuisine.
St. Enodoc’s Guy Owen, Kota’s Jude Kereama, The Rick Stein Group’s Stephane Delourme and The Alverton’s very own Executive Chef Nick Hodges, curated a unique menu that highlighted the county’s best seafood, grass-fed meats and harvest.
Diners were treated to a performance by a traditional Cornish Sea Shanty group and a special talk hosted by BBC Radio Cornwall’s Daphne Skinnard, all about Cornwall’s fishing industry.
A grand total of £5,662 was raised in ticket sales and by the generous donations for prizes in the live auction. Bidding on prizes such as a signed rugby shirt by the British and Irish Lions Squad, a signed racing helmet from Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie and a night’s stay and dining experience at Falmouth’s The Greenbank.
On the event, the charity’s Fundraising Manager for Cornwall and Devon, Julian Waring, commented: “It was such a happy evening and a successful one too. The Alverton was the perfect venue and the room looked magical. The food and wines were outstanding, there was a friendly atmosphere amongst the guests and at the heart of it was the Fishermen’s Mission. The amount raised is going to make a huge difference to many fishing families who are struggling right now.”
Since 1881 The Fishermen’s Mission has delivered vital support to fishermen, their families and communities. With more than 13,000 people working in fishing across the UK, the charity strive to alleviate loneliness and improve welfare in fishing communities through providing emergency response to those in need, all year round.
