East Devon’s ‘golden mile’

Three different businesses in close proximity to each other not only scooped a coveted Gold at the recent Devon Tourism Awards but have all been named finalists in the South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

Located in Ottery St Mary and Gittisham, Coldharbour Field Kitchen, Mazzard Farm Holiday Cottages and THE PIG at Combe have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the tourist economy and high level of commitment to local sourcing.

Winner of the Casual Dining award, Coldharbour Field Kitchen only opened its doors in June 2022 but has since built up a loyal following amongst locals and visitors. Co-owners Beth Ashfield and Andrea Broadhurst place local sourcing at the heart of their hospitality business. “Not just in terms of produce which almost goes without saying, but also in supporting nearby trades,” explained Andrea. “Local people designed, built and fitted out our new field kitchen, from the tables, chairs and coffee machine to the decking which gives such amazing views.”

Near neighbour Mazzard Farm picked up a joint Gold for Ethical, Responsible & Sustainable Tourism Award. The holiday accommodation business welcomes hundreds of visitors to the area each year, and has shown an ongoing commitment to sustainability, installing solar panels and EV charging point, creating wildlife habitats, sourcing locally – and generally offering a holiday experience with minimal impact on the environment. Owner Ruud Jansen Venneboer said: “We are just over the moon; it’s a great recognition for all the team here at Mazzard Farm for all the hard work we’ve put in.”

THE PIG at Combe was named Small Hotel of the Year. Hotel Director, Chris Charles added: “Winning Gold at the Devon Tourism Awards has meant so much to me and the team, particularly in light of the strength of the competition here in Devon. This award is testament to all the hard work the team has put in and is especially welcome following the last few years which have been extremely challenging for all in hospitality. The support structure we have in place thanks to our Chairman Robin Hutson and Managing Director Tom Ross has set the benchmark to help us in achieving this great award.  And of course, having a team that is truly passionate really helps!”

To have three impressive winners in such a small area which boasts many other high quality establishments shows why the region is so popular with tourists. As Andrea says, “East Devon really does know how to punch above its weight!”

They will find out how they’ve fared in the Excellence Awards at the Eden Project on March 23rd.
