A first for Cornish tourism as holiday home company commits to climate fundraiser

Helping to tackle climate change in the county, Cornish Gems is the first tourism company to pledge significant support to the ‘Love Where You Are‘ campaign alongside Cornwall Council and Crowdfunder.

This campaign is funding low carbon and nature recovery projects in Cornwall’s fight against the climate and ecological emergencies. In a first for Cornish tourism, Cornish Gems is backing the initiative by pledging support, to raise funds and awareness, helping to make a positive impact throughout 2023/24.

As Cornwall’s leading independent specialist of exceptional holidays, Cornish Gems shares a special interest in sustainability and the future of responsible tourism.

In place of the company’s annual Gems Charity of The Year initiative – which has raised over £22,000 for local good causes since 2018, including £5345 for leading youth mental health charity Young Minds in 2022 alone – this year Cornish Gems commits entirely to the Love Where You Are campaign.

Funds raised will go towards the Cornwall Climate and Nature Fund to support green community projects – such as increasing access to electric bikes and solar panels, tree planting and the creation of accessible community green spaces such as allotments and woodlands.

Emma Fashokun, Cornish Gems ESG Manager, says: “We’re so excited to support this amazing initiative from Cornwall Council and Crowdfunder. As an independent, local company embarking on our B-Corp journey this year it’s particularly gratifying to be able to raise funds and awareness for climate and nature-based projects in communities across Cornwall.”

Martyn Alvey, Cornwall Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for the environment and climate change, said: “Having the support of Cornish Gems will go a long way towards helping community environmental projects get off the ground and thrive, such as to improve our green spaces for residents, boost low carbon active travel and protect nature.

“If you’re a business wanting to help community groups get their projects up and running, find out more about our Love Where You Are campaign and pledge your support to the Cornwall Climate and Nature Fund.”

Dawn Bébe, Crowdfunder co-founder and director, said: “We’re delighted that Cornish Gems and their customers will be supporting our Love Where You Are campaign that aims to support projects that are taking action against climate change and protecting the natural environment of Cornwall.

“Crowdfunder exists to tackle society’s challenges by making ideas happen and, as Crowdfunder is headquartered in Cornwall, this is one campaign we’re keen to see everyone who loves Cornwall support.”

Cornish Gems is using their network to boost awareness and support for the climate related community projects, whilst simultaneously raising funds and encouraging education to drive positive change.
