A Cornish hotel is calling on volunteers to play their part in a giant community beach clean next month

The Headland is joining forces with numerous local groups and organisations to give Fistral Beach – one of Europe’s most iconic surf spots – an autumnal spruce-up on Saturday 14th October.

Veryan Palmer, Hotel Family Director, said: “The Headland has had a relationship with the sea and its shores for more than 100 years and we’re committed to maintaining its beauty and health. We want as many people as possible to come and join us to celebrate our surroundings and do their bit to keep our beautiful coast clean and safe for everyone.”

Collaborating with the hotel is Waterhaul, a social enterprise which transforms plastic from our coastline into products such as sunglasses and knives. It will provide litter pickers for the clean and it will also have a stall selling them on the day. The Headland has also recruited the help of its on-site surf school, The Surf Sanctuary, who will be combining catching waves with the coastal cleanse.

The clean-up operation will run from 10.30am to 12.00pm and everyone is welcome to head to Fistral Beach to lend a hand. Volunteers will need to register at The Headland from 10.15am.

Besides the beach clean, organisers are also looking to stage a mass surfing santa drone photo, so they’re asking volunteers to bring festive fancy dress and surfboards, body boards and SUPs if they want to take part in the photo opportunity. The surfing santas will gather at 12.00pm for a half-hour photo shoot.

The Headland will serve tea, coffee and mince pies to all participants from 12.00pm to 2.00pm, before all litter is packed down at the hotel ready for recycling at 2.15pm. There will be collection buckets and The Headland’s card machine for donations to Cornwall Community Foundation, which awards grants to volunteer-led organisations making a positive impact.
