The Good Cup: Revolutionizing Sustainability in the UK’s Coffee Industry

Plastic waste is at an all time high and continues to grow as an issue. Even with the new plastic ban coming into force one area that is not covered is the crisis caused by single use plastic based coffee cups and lids. With the UK creating in excess of 50,000kg from plastic based cups alone something needs to be done.

Even the current compostable options do not offer a solution as they require a much greater energy use to produce and as with most things eco, come at a higher price making it inaccessible to SME and National business alike, especially at a time where the bottom line has never been so under pressure with price hikes across the board.

Enter The Good Cup. A 100% paper based hot and cold drinks cup with integrated folding lid. That’s right no separate lid required, already dramatically reducing the waste created and coupled with the plastic free cup itself, this could finally be the solution. Cornish Company No More Lids Limited certainly thinks so and have worked closely with the cups creators in Hong Kong and are now ready to launch The Good Cup into the UK. “Our glorious Cornwall and in fact the entire South West are famed for the natural beauty and stunning coastlines, all of which suffer from the waste left from the industry that supports them, tourism: It’s a vicious cycle and more than ever our home counties need to make a change and in turn show the rest of the UK that something can indeed be done.” said MD of No More Lids, Chris Robinson-Brown. “With years of experience at all levels of the hospitality industry, from service to supply, I understand first hand the issues.”

The cup itself uses 35% less energy to produce than the current PLU lined cups that dominate the market and come in compact cases of 1000 cups, offer space saving in storage and reduce transport costs too! The cup itself can be recycled as paper or home composted leaving no trace in around 6 months and in comparison to the 50+ years from the current cup options and longer for their plastic lids, the difference this can make is clear to see. “The most important part for me when working with The Good Cup was to ensure it could be offered to the market at a good price! All too often being green and doing the right thing comes with a hefty price tag. We are bringing the cup to the UK at a price that makes it accessible to all.”

With a growing client list pre-order for the first stock from both the local area and national corporations, the change is coming and the benefits are for us all! UK based production plans are also underway and should switch towards the end of 2024, further reducing any carbon footprint the cup may have and bringing jobs as well.

The cup can be fully branded too and designs are in the works for some of the South West’s top attractions. Alongside this, two local coffee suppliers have teamed up for this project to create the Cup for Cornwall, using the Good Cup. This will ensure every Cornwall business will have easy access to the cup. Full details of the Cup for Cornwall and The Good Cup itself will be released on NoMoreLids social media channels in the coming months leading up to the launch. If you would like to add the Good Cup to your business get in touch to find out more!

“I strongly believe the South West can lead the way in this huge industry change and we are excited to make this change for the whole of the UK from right here in Cornwall!”
