The flight before Christmas: Hot air balloon delivers festive tree to Cornish hotel

A luxury hotel in Cornwall has taken a very special delivery in time for the Christmas season.

The Headland brought an entirely new meaning to air mail when Father Christmas sailed into Newquay to deliver the 12-foot tree, which is the centrepiece of the five-star hotel’s festive celebrations. The high-flying Father Christmas caused quite a stir when he navigated the balloon across the picturesque peninsula to drop off the decorated Christmas tree. After gently touching down, he enlisted the help of staff to unhook the giant fir tree and transport it inside to take pride of place in the hotel’s reception area.

Veryan Palmer, hotel family director, said: “A flying visit from Father Christmas provided the perfect way to put our guests and staff in a festive mood. It was fortunate that he sailed in on such a calm day, because air balloons don’t perform well in windy conditions.” She added: “He delivered the Christmas tree with all the skill and poise of an extremely experienced balloon pilot. It was an eye-catching way to mark the start of the Christmas season and caused quite a stir amongst guests and local walkers.”

Once safely on terra ferma, the adventurous Saint Nicholas also found time to sample nearby Fistral Beach’s world-famous surf, before taking to the skies again to make his next delivery.

The award-winning hotel embraces the festive period, with Wreath-Making workshops and Festive Afternoon Teas proving hugely popular with both guests and non-residents.

Set upon an exclusive clifftop above Cornwall’s world-famous Fistral Beach, The Headland is the ideal place to relax and unwind in luxury hotel suites or stylish self-catering cottages. From its high vantage point, the hotel enjoys a stunning panorama, with views towards Padstow to the north and Poldark’s Holywell Bay to the south.

It is also home to the first five-bubble rated spa in Cornwall. From the sweeping coastal views of the Spa Lounge to the sumptuous relaxation suite and low-lit treatment rooms, every element of the Headland Spa is designed with relaxation at its heart.
