Thorne’s Farm Shop & Café is surrounded by the 125 acres of beautiful Devonshire farmland that the Thorne family have cultivated for years. Known primarily for their delicious strawberries, the farm shop came to life in 1992 and has evolved into a much-loved provider of all things fresh and local, embodying the strapline “from our fields to your table”.
The rainbow displays of fresh fruit and vegetables on offer in the shop are enough to tempt the most hardened of carnivore! Homegrown cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, courgettes, beetroot and rhubarb are lined up in wooden crates ready for the customers who know that they were growing in the fields across the road only hours before going into their baskets – absolute minimal food miles and not a plastic wrap in sight!
Summer and early autumn see strawberries, raspberries and local plums swollen and juicy on the shelves ready for the shoppers or, those with more time on their hands can choose to pick their own in the adjoining fields. Pick Your Own runner beans are also available in season or Gather Your Own pumpkin ready for Halloween.

The dairy and deli counters in the shop are stocked with local cheeses and yoghurts and milk and cream from just over the border from Cornwall’s Trewithen dairy. Fresh eggs are from Black Dog farm and a delicious wholesome range of baked goods are from Oliver’s bakery in Crediton. Should the carnivore in you persist then there’s a well-stocked butchery supplied by Cox’s of Crediton and free-range poultry from the Creedy Carver.
The adjoining, beamed café is a fabulously tempting affair with the seasonal food being made with the farm’s freshest ingredients. Leek and potato soup to warm you on the coldest of days or a full English to kick start your day and set you up to tackle the world, there’s something for everybody and should the sun be shining, you can sit outside and drink in the beauty of the rolling hills and the farmland that is feeding you.
What a spot!
