Sadly our industry faces two issues when it comes to sustainability: The high volume of single use plastic generated everyday, which here in the UK is in excess of 52,000kg per day and new issues created by greenwashing.
As business owners and customers we all try to do our part for sustainability but the truth about cups is most, which state they are compostable, still contain a lining made of PLA which can only be industrially composted and if PLA ends up in the normal paper recycling chain, it can contaminate the batch and render other materials un-recyclable. Enter the Good Cup, now officially launched in the UK.
This epic change for the industry is being ushered in by a Cornish company No More Lids.
“When we first discovered the Good Cup it just made sense from every angle. 35% less energy to produce, 40% less space, meaning less Co2 footprint and saving businesses valuable space. The cup is genuinely compostable both industrially or at home and it scored the highest possible score in recyclability tests and is simply processed as paper.” said managing director Chris Ropbinson-Brown. “The Good Cup also has a unique integrated folding lid meaning no more plastic lids or soggy paper lids – I genuinely believe the Good Cup is the future of cups and from the uptake we have seen since launch, the public and business owners alike are ready for a change!”
Working alongside Swift Catering Supplies as the official Cornwall reseller, and with iconic local brands such as Adrenalin Quarry and Kynance Cafe set within a stunning National Trust site, already using the cup, it feels like Cornwall is embracing this cup evolution – or should it be called a revolution? With over 4200kg of single use plastic already removed from our environment after just 2 months, the change that this little cup can make will be massive!
“We have worked with the incredible Sam Howe of FilmsBach to create a mini documentary about the single use plastic issues created by the hospitality industry, and to help people see there is a real need for change, as well as explaining how the Good Cup can have a big impact – all it takes is to make one small change.”
The Good Cup doesn’t carry the usual sustainable tax this country seems to face and is offered at a lower cost than the separate “eco” cup and lid alternatives, and so the question isn’t “Can we make the change?” but rather “When will we make the change?”
