Westaway Sausages are a fast-growing specialist pork sausage manufacturer based in Devon. They use fresh pork from Red Tractor accredited farms to produce a wide range of sausages for retail, wholesale, and foodservice customers regionally, nationally and for export.
Their Taste of the West Sustainability Champion award follows up their award in 2022 for Champion Sausage.
Westaways are pioneers in developing and using alternative and more sustainable alternatives to plastics. In particular Westaways have replaced some 20 million plastic trays with recyclable and compostable card trays made from sustainably sourced wood pulp. Their use of home and industrially compostable flexible film is unique for overwrapping meat in UK retailers. Westaways frozen sausages are packed in a compostable bag that can be reused as a food waste caddy liner.
Westaways are based in the heart of a fast-growing community in Newton Abbot. With some 16,000 new homes planned, and over 40 schools within 10 miles Westaways are committed to getting involved with this community and supporting it. They are proud to be principal sponsor of Newton Abbot Rugby Club, and help it develop into one of the largest community sports clubs in the South West.
Chales Baughan, owner of Westaway Sausages says about winning the Sustainability Champion Award: “Today, sustainability is a prerequisite to any business that is looking to the future, as is being ethical, inclusive, and working within communities. Consumers and partners are looking for clear evidence on the values and culture of brands, as they seek to become more sustainable. This award from Taste of the West will give them absolute reassurance about Westaways and its credentials.”
