West Dorset-based Modern Art Distillery (M.A.D) has expanded its links with the art world by sponsoring its first award in the South West Academy’s open competition.
The award was presented to Rachel Byles, from Somerset, whose watercolour painting Beyond Winter Blackthorns caught the eye of M.A.D founders Catharine Russell and Caroline Harrison.

Said Catharine: “We loved the vibrancy, colours and composition of Rachel’s painting. There was some amazing work in the exhibition, but hers really stood out.” Rachel received her award from TV actor John Nettles at the private view of the South West Academy’s exhibition at Kennaway House in Sidmouth.
M.A.D was launched in 2023 with a unique concept of commissioning artists to design the labels for its gin, rum and vodka bottles. Since then, the company has commissioned nine artists across the UK – from the Outer Hebrides to Cornwall – for its spirits range.
“We’re delighted to have sponsored this award and look forward to being involved again in next year’s Open Exhibition,” said Catharine. “Our aim is to support and promote artists and we’re very pleased to be able to give an award to a local practitioner. There’s a clear synergy between our brand and the wider art world and we hope our partnership with the South West Academy will be a springboard into collaborating with more arts organisations across the region and beyond.”

Artist Rachel commented: “I was thoroughly delighted to hear that Modern Art Distillery had selected my work for their award. Their recognition is a great encouragement and it’s wonderful to know that they will continue to support the arts through this prize and their unique business.”
Artist and South West Academy Trustee Alison Summerfield, who approached M.A.D to sponsor an artist award, commented on their choice: “Rachel’s work has an evocative quality, she has captured winter light in the landscape beautifully – visitors thought so too as it sold on the night. I am very much looking forward to working with Catharine and Caroline on future projects.”
