AVAL, meaning apple in Cornish, was born out of necessity in 2008 when Polgoon faced a challenging grape harvest. With poor crop yields, the team decided to experiment and create a sparkling wine from the apples in the orchard, instead of grapes. The result was a fresh, effervescent wine that quickly garnered popularity and received rave reviews, earning a Taste of the West Gold Medal in 2010 and becoming a finalist in the UK Quality Drinks Awards.
However, as Polgoon’s grape harvests improved in subsequent years, AVAL was put on the backburner as attention shifted back to grape-based sparkling wines. But now, in 2024, Polgoon is embracing an experimental approach to wine-making, delving into exciting new projects, including orange wines and wild yeast wines. As part of this new experimental direction, Polgoon is reintroducing AVAL as a small-batch, limited-edition wine, with only 400 bottles available.
