Ryan Venning announced as new Head Chef at Kota Kai, Porthleven

Kota Kai, in Porthleven, Cornwall, is delighted to announce Ryan Venning has joined their kitchen as Head Chef.

Originally from South Africa, Ryan brings over two decades of experience to his new role at Kota Kai. His journey in the culinary world has seen him master his craft in prestigious kitchens around the world. Ryan’s style is deeply influenced by his heritage, blending bold, vibrant flavours with contemporary techniques to create exciting dining experiences.

Ryan’s love for food, the outdoors and especially the ocean, encouraged him to travel to Cornwall in 2001 to embark on a mission to learn all about the plethora of seafood and incredible produce in Cornwall, exploring the natural ingredients on the North and South coastline. His knowledge of the food scene has helped to hone his skill and reputation, cementing him as one of the top chefs in the South West.

Over the past 22 years Ryan has run the pass at some of Cornwall’s top restaurants, including the renowned Porthminster Beach Café, and has also featured in the national Top 100 Restaurants Awards. Ryan is passionate about supporting local and national charities for good causes with pop up foodie events, which is something that will continue in his tenure at Kota Kai.

Kota Kai was originally launched by Jude Kereama in 2011 and is found in the heart of the historic Cornish village, overlooking the harbour just moments from sister restaurant, Kota. Kota Kai was created to provide a family friendly option with integrity – a restaurant that offered a laid back, welcoming atmosphere with a delicious menu that stood out from the usual family-friendly fayre and was a nod to Jude’s heritage with Asian elements to its dishes. Now, 14 years later, Ryan’s appointment aligns with the recent refurbishment and update, creating a version of Kota Kai that retains it’s warm welcome, but has become a little more sophisticated.

Jude Kereama commented: “Ryan is an incredible chef and a true talent in the kitchen. His philosophy of using local, sustainable ingredients aligns perfectly with what we value at Kota Kai. We are delighted to welcome him to the team and I can’t wait to cook alongside him!”

Ryan shared his excitement about joining Kota Kai, saying: “Jude and his team at Kota Kai have always been a standout on Cornwall’s food scene, and I’m honoured to step into this role. I’m looking forward to working closely with Jude to celebrate the incredible produce we have here on our doorstep and ensure Kota Kai continues its success.”

Kota Kai continues into 2025 as a destination for an exceptional warm welcome and fabulous dining in Cornwall. Guests can look forward to an ever-evolving menu, complete with long term favourites, along with some soon-to-be-announced special evening events following the success of the Asian Nights.
