The Port Gaverne, a beloved Cornish pub near Port Isaac, has reopened this month with an interior refresh and new management.
After more than 10 years being run as part of St Austell Brewery’s leased and tenanted estate, the Port Gaverne is the latest addition to the brewery’s award-winning collection of 46 managed properties.
Nestled in the heart of Cornwall’s north coast, the pub is a stone’s throw from the picturesque beach it’s named after. The dramatic coastline and surrounding Port Isaac area is also famous for its association with the popular TV series Doc Martin.
The pub’s new look includes a complete interior refurbishment. As well as transforming the bar, the restaurant and bedrooms have been updated and now offer up light, airy spaces inspired by the coastal surroundings. The 15 rooms – a selection of which boast sweeping sea views – have been modernised and include plenty of cosy touches.
The new design, which flows through the pub, includes a colour palette of warm browns paired with cool blues. Natural materials, such as rattan and wood, add to the atmosphere.
The dining space also reopened last week, complete with a refreshed menu championing seasonality and South West suppliers. Dishes on the menu vary from deep and rich Mena Dhu braised venison shoulder to classics with a twist such as the monkfish and tiger prawn fish pie.

Pilchards, the pub’s restaurant opposite which has breathtaking views of the beach cove, will also reopen this spring with a new menu. Once opened, it will continue to offer its popular coal-grilled fare and will focus on championing fresh, locally sourced meat and seafood.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Port Gaverne into our managed estate,” said Andrew Turner, Chief Operating Officer at St Austell Brewery. “The pub has a rich history and a loyal local following, and we look forward to building on its legacy with our award-winning hospitality. With its unbeatable location, relaxing accommodation and excellent food, we are excited to provide an unforgettable experience for both locals and visitors.”
Other pubs in St Austell Brewery’s managed estate include the extensively refurbished Pier House in Charlestown, which reopened last summer, the award-winning Masons Arms in Branscombe, Devon, and the recently acquired Godolphin in Marazion, overlooking St Michael’s Mount.
