Visitors to Sasa’s Indian Kitchen and Bar between 6th and 12th October might feel as though they’ve stepped straight back into 1982 — and that’s exactly the idea.
To mark National Curry Week, the team at Sasa’s have crafted a nostalgic menu inspired by the year that owner Foyez Rahman’s uncle—the restaurant’s namesake, “Sasa”—first began his culinary journey in an Indian restaurant in London.
Since the 1970s, curry houses have become a beloved part of British dining culture, serving millions of curries every week across the nation. The very first National Curry Week took place in October 1998, founded by the late Peter Grove, a journalist with a passion for Indian cuisine. His aim was to celebrate the growing Indian restaurant scene while also supporting charitable causes.
To honour that spirit, Sasa’s will feature a series of retro specials throughout the week, including traditional favourites such as Karahi (a wok-cooked dish), Bhuna Gosht, and the legendary Bombay Duck—which, despite its name, is in fact a fish.
Sasa’s Indian Kitchen and Bar took over the restaurant at Pettifers Hotel, on the Wiltshire–Gloucestershire border, in August 2024. Since then, it has quickly become a local favourite, drawing diners from nearby Malmesbury, Cirencester, and beyond.
Proprietor Foyez Rahman said: “Curry Week is a great way of introducing new people to the dishes, making a time to see friends and also to raise a bit for charity. We will be giving 10 per cent to Heals of Malmesbury, which is one of the key reasons for Curry Week, to give back to the community. The menu will sit alongside ours and will be a set option for individuals or your table.”
HEALS of Malmesbury provides one-to-one, free and confidential support to local individuals and families in need. Their work includes helping those facing poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, disability, unemployment, or financial hardship, as well as acting as a Foodbank agent for the community.
Foyez added: “If you would like to give the new menu a try, by all means come in. We also do breakfast for all, and that is served 07:30–10:30, and at weekends and Bank Holidays, 8:00–11:00am. The set menu will be available in the evenings as well as our regular menu, and of course take away.”
Menus are available online at pettifershotel.co.uk and you can follow Sasa’s news on Facebook and Instagram.
