BANK Bristol hosts Whyte’s Restaurant, as worldwide tour goes regional

BANK Bristol will welcome Whyte’s Restaurant to Totterdown on Thursday 11 December, for a one-night collision of live-fire cooking, big-flavour and no-rules plates.

The latest stop on Whyte Rushen and Livi Akers’ worldwide tour – now making its way across Britain following a series of 20 international pop ups over 6 months – this one-off night in Bristol will see full à la carte menu built together by Whyte Rushen and BANK’s executive chef and co-owner, Jack Briggs-Horan. There will be snacks to tear into, sharing plates off the grill, and a few filthy, limited-run specials that nod to both Hackney and the South West.

The menu leans into big winter flavours and West Country comfort, from Yorkshire puds with whipped cod’s roe and trout caviar, to truffled Romanesco cauliflower cheese, and mussels in a Somerset cider-brandy cream. There’s wild boar and apple sausage with a crab-cider sauce, and an Ashton Court venison chop with bone marrow gravy. To finish, there’s a sticky lardy cake with date butterscotch and a hit of rosemary and double dairy.

Whyte’s Worldwide Tour has visited Tokyo, Bangkok, Bali, Shanghai, Chengdu, Seoul, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Athens, New York, Florida, Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona, Mexico City, Philadelphia and St Catherine’s. The pair departed from their hugely sought after restaurant in Hackney earlier this year to hop from city to city and explore different cultural contexts, bringing the Whyte’s take on each local cuisine along the way.

Whyte Rushen and Livi Akers commented: “When the champagne bottle smashes on the hull of the boat and you set sail screaming bon voyage, you don’t think about the return, the holiday blues times a billion…the absolute void and how humdrum it becomes after the noise has settled. The deafening silence. You’re sat there in front of the telly, wondering why it can’t be forever. Well.. Britain? Not so bad, really. It calls itself Great— and you know what, it kind of earns it. The humour’s dry, the weather’s wetter, the food’s humbly perfect. So, we’re taking this show on the road. Funny thing is when you’re from London, you forget there’s a whole country beyond the M25. You don’t think to go up the M4, down the coast, see what’s cooking out there.”

Dan O’Regan, owner and founder of BANK, added: “Jack and I have long admired Whyte’s cooking, so it’s been a lot of fun putting this night together. Having never had the opportunity to visit the restaurant, we’re really excited to stand alongside him in the kitchen. I know they’ve had a blast across the UK already, in places like Brighton, Glasgow, Norfolk and Manchester, so we can’t wait to bring some West Country flavour to the pop-up tour.”

Reservations are now open for Whyte’s x BANK on Thursday 11 December via BANK’s website, where full à la carte menu details can also be found.
BANK Bristol is open from Tuesday to Thursday 6pm – 10pm, Friday & Saturday from 12pm to 10pm and Sunday from 12pm – 7pm. Diners can book via www.bankbristol.com.
