Notes on a Napkin, the candid and irreverent Substack from owner and founder of Bank and Lapin, Dan O’Regan has been included in The Observer Magazine’s OFM 30, a list celebrating ‘the 30 things that are shaping how we cook, order and eat.’
Sharing the list with the likes of Nigel Slater, Adam Byatt and Gareth Ward, Dan’s Substack newsletter, which takes frequent deep dives into the realities of restaurant life, was praised for its “intelligent, witty insight into the mechanics of hospitality”. Food and drink writer, Tony Naylor, said “The real gold lies in O’Regan’s intelligent mulling of hot topics from influencers to dogs in restaurants, and his deft sketches on restaurant life”, highlighting the “tremendous bursts of enthusiasm for teamwork, cooking, solo diners or long midweek lunches.”
Commenting on his inclusion in the OFM 30, Dan said: “This is very unexpected and a proper ‘pinch me’ moment. I started Notes on a Napkin as a structured outlet for the restless thoughts that swirl around my head while running restaurants, and had no real expectations for what it might achieve – so it feels completely insane to have my writing celebrated alongside some of this year’s most exciting chefs, trends and ingredients.”
