West Middlewick Farm Shop, Devon

Tucked away in the rolling countryside of Mid Devon, just outside the village of the wonderfully-named Nomansland, near Tiverton, West Middlewick Farm Shop is the kind of place that invites you to slow down, look around and enjoy the simple pleasures of good food and beautiful surroundings.

Heading west along the B3137, West Middlewick is surrounded by working farmland and wonderful views towards Exmoor and offers the perfect spot to enjoy a taste of rural Devon.

The story of West Middlewick began in 1964 when farmer Thos was left 33 acres of land. He began milking cows in 1965, starting with a small collection of Devon Ayrshires, Jerseys, Guernseys and other animals. By the early 1970s he was bottling and selling his own raw milk, cream and free-range eggs from honesty shelves outside the dairy door. What began with this simple offering has gradually grown into the welcoming farm shop that stands today, housed in a beautifully converted old shippon.

At the heart of the shop is the farm’s own milk. Bottled fresh every day, customers can choose between award-winning raw milk and gently pasteurised whole milk. The farm places great importance on animal welfare and sustainable farming, with milk coming from well-cared-for cows, retaining the rich, creamy character that makes farm-fresh milk so special.

The shop also offers farm-reared meat and a tempting range of Devon produce. Seasonal fruit and vegetables sit alongside artisan cheeses, butter, ice cream, jams, chutneys and Devon fudge. There are handcrafted local goods too, including homemade soap and sheepskins – perfect if you fancy taking home a little reminder of your visit.

And there’s another reason to linger. The Hayloft Café serves breakfasts, lunches, coffee, cakes and a traditional Devon cream tea – with the cream first, naturally! With views stretching towards Exmoor, it’s a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the landscape. The café can accommodate around 40–50 people, making it equally suited to groups, private functions or a relaxed family visit.

There is also a small campsite, adding to the farm’s appeal as a place to escape the everyday and enjoy the Devon countryside at its most peaceful.
