The Admiral Sir John Talbot in Cirencester is inviting the community to come together this Remembrance Sunday for a special three-course supper in recognition of the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, in the British Armed Forces.
The specially created menu is the idea of head chef Ethan Rodgers, who was inspired to organise the evening following a conversation with a military veteran involved in the town’s Remembrance parade. Ethan, who is also one of the founding business partners behind the pub, explained that the conversation highlighted a gap in the town’s hospitality offering for those wishing to enjoy a meal after the morning’s commemorations.
“He told me that he and his family always wanted to go out and eat later in the day, but apart from the hotels, there wasn’t really anywhere they could go in a pub. One elderly gentleman mentioned that he had to rush back to his village for dinner. It got me thinking that perhaps we could do something to make it a little easier for people to stay in town, spend some time together and enjoy a proper meal after the parade.
“It’s not a huge gesture, but I’ve put together a three-course menu that I hope people will enjoy. We all have connections to the Armed Forces, whether through our own families, friends or people we’ve met along the way. It’s important that we recognise that service and show our appreciation.”
The supper will offer a choice of dishes for each course, including slow-braised oxtail soup or roast pumpkin and Parmesan soup, followed by hot Coronation chicken with toasted almonds, golden sultanas and pilaff rice, or a wild mushroom risotto with shallots, tarragon and fresh Parmesan.
Dessert will be a choice of apricot bread and butter pudding with custard and vanilla ice cream, or traditional English Cheddar served with grapes, celery and crackers.
The Admiral Sir John Talbot is keen to make the evening an opportunity for people to come together in the spirit of Remembrance, while also supporting the work of the Royal British Legion. The charity’s Poppy Appeal raises funds to provide lifelong support to serving and former members of the Armed Forces and their families, helping with everything from financial and practical assistance to recovery, rehabilitation and bereavement support.
Ethan added: “We wanted to do something that was appropriate for the occasion, that brought people together and, importantly, gave something back. If we can provide a nice evening for people and raise some money for a very worthwhile cause at the same time, then that’s a good thing.”
The Admiral’s Remembrance Day Supper takes place from 7pm on Sunday 8 November at The Admiral Sir John Talbot, Victoria Road, Cirencester. The three-course menu is priced at £33 per person with all profits goint to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Advance booking is recommended.
