The Holcombe, a 17th-century inn south of Radstock has been turned into a new hotel and restaurant by two London chefs who wanted to escape to the country.
Alan Lucas and Caroline Gardiner acquired The Holcombe Inn in 2019 but had to close after a few months due to Covid 19 restrictions. They have now refurbished the Grade-II listed building, offering 11 bedrooms, two private lodges in the garden, and a kitchen garden to provide ingredients for their menu.
Caroline Gardiner told Somerset Live: “The Holcombe is all about affordable luxury and is a great location for exploring Somerset. Through our recent redecoration we not only offer great house amenities but focus on a garden to plate dining experience.
“On purchasing The Holcombe, our vision was for it to be a beautiful country inn, concentrating on delicious food, homegrown in our kitchen garden and sourced from local suppliers. We are delighted to now be open and certainly hope visitors to The Holcombe can have an unforgettable stay and enjoy seasonal contemporary dining in our beautiful setting.”
As well as sourcing local produce, they use as little plastic packaging as possible. Homemade infusions for gins and vodkas also come from the garden.
The sample menu includes double-baked gruyere cheese souffle, cheese & chive fondue; game terrine, garden plum chutney, ale, walnut and sultana bread; pan-fried guinea fowl, tarragon leeks, charred broccoli, shimeji a la grecque; 10oz Somerset Sirloin, confit shallot tarte fine, walnut salsa; and coconut arancini, citrus puree, mandarin sorbet.
