In June 2023, the Institute of Hospitality launched the Hearts in Hospitality initiative to acknowledge and celebrate the unsung heroes of the hospitality industry. This initiative aims to give a special thank you to those who consistently delight their guests, teams, visitors, and customers.
It has been announced that Gerry Barage, the Breakfast Chef at the Castle Hotel in Taunton, has been awarded the Institute’s Hearts in Hospitality Award. This award recognizes Gerry’s exceptional service and dedication in his role.
Gerry was nominated by The Castle’s director and general manager, Ronan Hunter for his “unwavering commitment to his team and craft over an impressive 48-year career“. Known for creating memorable experiences for guests and ensuring every plate served is crafted with care and precision, Gerry’s positive attitude, enthusiasm, and adaptability have been a constant.
After reviewing this nomination, the judging panel unanimously agreed that Gerry was a deserving winner.
Institute of Hospitality director Max Lawrence said: “Alongside creating an experience for guests, and ensuring every plate exudes the same level of care and precision, Gerry’s positive attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to embrace change have endured. Gerry has also shown generosity of spirit on mentoring young chefs, helping them hone their skills and passions, and being a role model for the profession. Gerry has been a source of inspiration not only to his colleagues but to Castle Hotel guests.“
