Helen Browning’s Farm Shop, Wiltshire

It would be hard to find fresher vegetables than those nestled in the baskets of this lovely little farm shop. Harvested from the vegetable gardens behind the Royal Oak in Bishopstone and the farm at Eastbrook, the veg on offer at Helen Browning’s Farm Shop is truly mouth-watering.

Organic beetroot pulled from the ground in the morning is on sale in the afternoon, alongside beautiful mushrooms and shining aubergines. This is veg that makes your eyes widen and your mouth water. There is fruit too with credentials just as honourable as the veg. An agroforestry project started by Helen in 2016, saw thousands of trees planted on her farm as an experiment in permaculture. Now the rewards are being reaped with grapes (yes, Wiltshire grapes!), damsons, apples and raspberries being harvested from the farm and on sale in the farm shop. Some of the fruit is also processed into apple juice or the very tempting Blackcurrant Sylvan Spirit (an alcoholic treat perfect on its own over ice or mixed with champagne or soda). Sounds like a must!

There is golden, jewel-like honey taken from the bees that bumble around the farm and fresh eggs, organic bread made from their very own wheat and meat to create a sensational centre piece.

Raising happy, healthy animals is at the heart of everything these farmers do and this translates into delicious organic beef, pork and chicken. The meat cabinets are filled with fresh and frozen cuts, bacon, burgers and sausages, all waiting for you to turn in to a delicious dinner.

Or if you are popping in for a quick lunch then there are plenty of options for a food-to-go treat: organic filled baps, salads, pizza, cakes, or hot drinks which can all be enjoyed in the garden of the Royal Oak. And if you happen to be passing on a Friday then you cannot miss the magnificent doughnut specials delivered by Pippin & Co and a firm favourite with those locals in the know. How does a triple chocolate ring, a salted caramel & pistachio or a passionfruit curd take your fancy?
